Toronto considering GM replacement

The clock is ticking for Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. to save the team’s season and, in turn, his job — at least that’s the word from a hyperventilating Toronto sports media following the Leafs 5-1 loss to the lowly Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.

Speculation is rampant in the Toronto media that Ferguson either could be fired at any time, or he could fire Paul Maurice as his head coach, or could be frantically shopping around for a season-saving trade.

Former NHL players Steve Yzerman, Mark Messier, Ron Francis or Doug Gilmour have been mentioned in the press as Ferguson’s potential replacement. Their star power is undeniable, but their accomplishments were made on the ice and not in the front office.

Whoever takes over from Ferguson must be someone with significant management experience, not just in building and maintaining a franchise but also dealing with a voracious media that second-guesses every move.
