Some Nascar Racing And A Little NBA All-Star Fun

For those of us that enjoy watching the bigger spectacles of sporting events we had two this past weekend that were worth a peek. The first was the start of the new Nascar season with the traditional first race at the Daytona 500. The other event was the mid season break for the NBA and their all-star weekend event.

The Daytona 500 which is usually one of the most watched races of the season had an unfortunate day with the weather. The rain shortened race did not however have any shortage of drama as most of that was provided by fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. who by the end of the race was surely not a driver favorite. Jr. went from having a bad day with two miscues in the pits and being one lap down with 75 to causing a major wreck and wiping out some of the major contenders for victory lane. Then causing another accident with Jeff Burton later on in the race.

The other drama in the sports world was the NBA all-star weekend. Which continues to be one of the more fan friendly all-star games for any sport. Some of the best highlights were the battle for the slam dunk championship between defending “Superman” champ Dwight Howard and Nate Robinson. Nate Robinson eventually proved that he was the Kryptonite to Dwight Howard’s Superman and beat him with 52% of the vote. It was fun to see them going back and forth with their dunks and giving the crowd a good show.

The other big news for the all-star game of course was the re-joining of Shaq and Kobe playing on the West teams all-stars. The combo proved to be too much for the East as the West won big and Kobe and Shaq were named co-mvps of the game. Almost as if it was perfectly orchestrated by the marketing team over at the NBA.

What other sports stories over the weekend got your attention? The A-Rod steroid story continues to bloom in the NY spotlight. How much longer will baseball have to endure all these negative stories of steroid abuse? Looking forward to the new season so we can get back to talking about actual baseball stories.
