There are a couple of “news stories” in the world of sports today that are actually pretty interesting in that neither one of the stories have anything to do with the major sports stars actually playing their sport. Both Shaquille O’Neal and Tiger Woods are making headlines in the sports world Shaq for the major trade to a another team in the NBA and Tiger for his upcoming late nite appearance on the Jimmy Fallon show to play his new EA Golf game Tiger Woods 10.
It’s amazing to me how much has changed over the years and where all the media attention puts it’s focus now a days. For example the Shaq trade is definitely a huge blockbuster trade that brings LeBron James what many people feel is the missing piece to the Cleveland Cavaliers quest for a championship. If you look at the majority of the sports stories being written about this trade most of them are focused on how Shaq and Lebron will be able to share the spotlight? As far as I can tell they are both very well paid professionals that are out there to do a job, of course they will be great! Would you expect anything less from high caliber professionals like that? I know I am showing my age a bit here but I remember a time when the sports stories would cover how the team will play with these kinds of changes and that would be it, let the players do their jobs and move on. Now the focus is totally on the individuals, how much money they are making and how their stats are going to be affected.
Any way on a totally different topic for all you golf fanatics out there and there are millions of you out there thanks to Tiger Woods. What do you think the odds are the Jimmy Fallon show is going to see a big spike in his ratings tonight thanks to his public challenge to play Tiger Woods in a game of Wii Tiger Woods 10 golf. Honestly this is probably one of the more brilliant viral marketing moves I have seen for a video game in a long time. You just know that search results are going to go through the roof for the Tiger Woods Wii golf game and Tiger Woods vs Jimmy Fallon video clips. All of this of course feeds into that whole media focused attention on the athletes of today outside of their sport. I guess I am just old fashioned when it comes to my sports stories, I enjoy the reports about the sport itself. All the other stories about the athletes outside of their sport is a bunch of fluff
