This has to be the best damn sports story of the week and what’s great about it is the fact that it does not even involve an athlete. This story involves a little old lady Bernice Gallego who at the age of 72 has never even been to a baseball game in her entire life. Well it turns out that what Bernice and her husband do is collect antiques and they usually buy them by the lot.
Well it turns out that one of those antique lot purchases gave her a particular box that happened to contain an old picture of what she could tell was an old baseball card. So she figured that like she does almost every day she would put that old picture up for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $10.
Well it did not take long for the real deal baseball card collectors to start sending her questions. Questions like where did she get it and was it authentic and one request to stop the auction and sell it privately. This was enough of a red flag to Bernice so based on the advice of some friends and her husband they ended the auction with out a bid and decided to take it down to PSA. PSA you see is one of the top sports card authenticating companies in the country.
Well it turns out that Bernice had stumbled upon an original baseball card of the Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati from 1869!!!! This team is what most historians consider to be the first professional baseball team. I read this story in utter amazement just a jaw dropping discovery of a piece of American history. Truly an amazing find. The last I read is that Bernice and her husband will be putting the card back up on eBay soon. Some experts are expecting the card to go for five possibly even six figures! WoW is that an awesome story, here is the link to the original article that I read.
