Another Mixed Martial Arts league has called it quits as a third MMA league folds up shop this year. Elite XC is joining other MMA leagues to fold this year the Bodog Fight League and International Fight League. This latest collapse of another MMA league only helps to establish the monopoly like hold Dana White has on the MMA market with his UFC.
Let’s face it Elite XC was in trouble from the start and when they decided to put all their eggs in the one basket called Kimbo Slice it was really only a matter of time before this house of cards came crashing down. Oh boy did it come crashing down! Kimbo Slice was a glorified street fighter at best no matter how many no name or pass their prime fighters Elite XC put him up against. What happened in his fight with Petruzelli a last second no name fighter was for many in the know poetic justice, that he would knock the Elite XC savior out in 14 seconds was the final nail in the coffin for Elite XC.
Let’s face the facts MMA fans I know there are a lot of people on both sides of the fence when it comes to the UFC and their owner Dana White. Love him or hate him his game is almost the only game in town now. A hard truth that even Tito Ortiz may have to swallow as rumors of the MMA fighter was about to sign a deal with Elite XC which will never see the light of day now. So Tito’s only options now are back the UFC or Affliction MMA as these are the only two real MMA leagues to go to now. He will have plenty of time to think about though since he just had back surgery earlier this month and is expected to be out for a good six months.
So what’s the next big day for MMA fight fans? It looks to be full plate for MMA fight fans as both the UFC and Affliction camps jockey for position on when to schedule their fight days. Originally Affliction was going to have their Day of Reckoning on the 17th of January but then Dana White and his UFC decided to put their own fight card up on that night as well. So it looks like Affliction MMA is taking the 17th off the schedule and going to a different night. So it looks like 2009 will be shaping up to be a battle between the MMA champ UFC and it’s only serious contender Affliction MMA.

Great insight and the business side of things gets very confusing as the popularity of blood sports rises. I’m still shocked it has become a mainstream network television event.
We will see where the chips fall and the chips are pushing the whole game as wagering on these types of fights become huge. The dollars passing through gambling sites is massive and makes me wonder if Silva we will be taking a dive for dollars.
No matter what happens, I love it all!

I agree John, the amount of money being funneled around this sport is escalating at an amazing rate and I think 2009 will be a break out year for MMA. Hopefully Silva will continue his streak of dominance and the UFC keeps it clean, not like the nonsense that brought down the XC.
